| | | | | Question Paper Pattern of GATE-2009 – how many questions are asked in GATE in each paper, what are the marks/ negative marks per question, type of questions in the GATE exam.
At first a brief recap from the previous post: GATE-2009 exam would consist of a single paper to be selected by you. The 100 marks paper would consist of 60 questions which is to be answered in 3 hours duration from 09:30 AM TO 12:30 PM on 8th February, 2009 (Sunday).

| All the questions are multiple choice Objective type questions, each having four answer options, from which you need to select the correct answer, by darkening the appropriate option on an Objective Response Sheet (ORS) with a HB pencil.
With above background, lets find what is the question paper pattern of GATE-2009. Also for fun sake, let us find (with the GATE negative marking system), what is the lowest mark you can score, if you decide to get all answers wrong!
GATE-2009 Question Paper Pattern for all papers excluding XE, XL & GG Paper: There are 60 questions in total, grouped in four groups with a total of 100 marks to be answered in 3 hours. You can find what is the detailed break up of each group from the table given below (click the table to enlarge):
For fun sake, note the column “If all wrong”, if you decide to get all answers wrong, than the lowest mark you can score is -57.3! Brilliant, isn’t it?
What are General objective type, Common data based type, Linked answer type questions? Well, let me answer this question at the end of the post.
GATE-2009 Question Paper Pattern for Engineering Sciences (XE) paper: There are 60 questions in total in three sections with a total of 100 marks. You can find what is the detailed break up of each section in the table given below (click the table to enlarge):
For fun sake, note the column “If all wrong”, if you get all answers wrong, than the lowest mark you can score is – 57.3!
GATE-2009 Question Paper Pattern for Life Sciences (XL) paper: There are 60 questions in total in three sections with a total of 100 marks. You can find what is the detailed break up of each section in the table given below (click the table to enlarge):
For fun sake, note the column “If all wrong”, if you get all answers wrong, than the lowest mark you can score is – 58.7!
GATE-2009 Question Paper Pattern for Geology & Geophysics (GG) paper: There are 60 questions in total in two parts with a total of 100 marks. You can find what is the detailed break up of each parts in the table given below (click the table to enlarge):
For fun sake, note the column “If all wrong”, if you get all answers wrong, than the lowest mark you can score is – 37.3!
Sample GATE questions to explain different objective type questions: Coming back to question: What are General objective type, Common data based type, Linked answer type questions?
At first Linked answer type questions: In these types of questions, two questions are paired (say Q1 & Q2). Both the questions are based on a problem statement. Answer of Q2 depends on answer of Q1. Each question carries two marks.
Example of Linked answer questions: Problem Statement: Consider a machine with a byte addressable main memory of 216 bytes. Assume that a direct mapped data cache consisting of 32 lines of 64 bytes each is used in the system. A 50x50 two dimensional array of bytes is stored in the main memory starting from memory location 1100H. Assume that the data cache is initially empty. The complete array is accessed twice. Assume that the contents of the data cache do not change in between the two accesses.
First question of the pair Q.1 How many data cache misses will occur in total? (A) 48 (B) 50 (C) 56 (D) 59
Second question of the pair Q.2 Which of the following lines of the data cache will be replaced by new blocks in accessing the array for the second time? (A) line 4 to line 11 (B) line 4 to line 12 (C) line 0 to line 7 (D) line 0 to line 8
Common data based questions: It is just Linked answer type questions above. Only difference is here questions are not paired and hence answers of questions are not linked, answers of each questions are independent of each other. Also there can be more than 2 questions for a problem statement (i.e. Common Data). Each question carries two marks
Example of Common data based questions:
Common Data for Q1 and Q2: Let X and Y be jointly distributed random variables such that the conditional distribution of Y, given X=x, is uniform on the interval (x-1,x+1). Suppose E(X)=1 and Var(X)=5/3.
First question using common data Q.1 The mean of the random variable Y is (A) 1/2 (B) 1 (C) 3/2 (D) 2
Second question using common data Q.2 The variance of the random variable Y is (A) 1/2 (B) 2/3 (C) 1 (D) 2
General objective type questions: The “General objective type” nomenclature is given by me just to differentiate these type of questions from the above two types (Linked answer & Common data based) questions. It is not a GATE nomenclature! These type of questions are general type of objective questions as given below:
(i) Recall: These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.
Example: Q. During machining maximum heat is produced (A) in flank face (B) in rake face (C) in shear zone (D) due to friction between chip and tool.
(ii) Comprehension: These questions will test the candidates understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
Example Q. A DC motor requires a starter in order (A) to develop a starting torque (B) to compensate for auxiliary field ampere turns (C) to limit armature current at starting (D) to provide regenerative braking
(iii) Application: In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.
Example: Q. The sequent depth ratio of a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel is 16.48. The Froude number at the beginning of the jump is: (A) 10.0 (B) 5.0 (C) 12.0 (D) 8.0
