Hot Review - JSS Academy do Technical Education, Noida

UptuPlus Exclusive!!

In this brand new series, we bring out to you exclusive reviews of the colleges of UPTU. And who better to tell you about the colleges than the students themselves? We start with some of the engineering colleges of the NCR region. Read on to find out about JSS Academy of Technical Education, Noida.

Connectivity
If any of you have ever been to Noida, you’d know that it’s a planned city neatly divided into sectors. JSS is located in Sector-62 and is a bit far from the posh shopping and market areas of Noida. But it is well connected to the rest of the city by 3 wheelers, autos and buses. But the focal point for connection to the rest of the city is the famous Barah-Baais(12-22) mod which a busy T junction formed b/w the sectors 12 and 22 which is just a couple of kms from the college. Buses to all sorts of places like Delhi, Ghazb etc are available from here.

College - First Impression
Before entering the college, what strikes you most is the fact that Uptu’s brand new extension centre building has come up exactly in front of the main gate of JSS, right across the road. The college is built up on an area of about 30 acres(not very large) but sufficient for all the basic amenities. The first thing that strikes you is the greenery in the campus and the dull brown sleepy looking blocks housing the various departments.

Students
Students here come from almost all major cities of UP like Meerut, Jhansi, Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, and even from far off places like Varanasi. But more of the junta here happens to be from Kanpur. The high cutoff ranks ensure that only the best minds come here. But if only they would study; after all college is to be cool and have fun!

Hostels
The girls’ hostel is located on campus. It looks really great from outside and must really be good from the inside as well. (Sorry I haven’t been in there but would love to, I’m a boy!) But its fun sitting on the well manicured lawn in front of the girls hostel, a venue for farewells and formal functions. Although the girls in my class complain that the food is not good, I ask them to chill out.. Its’ just a college mess, not a 5-star hotel!

The Boys Hostel is a bit of a let down. Its’ not situated on campus. Although some construction has started, it’ll take a couple of more years for it to be fully complete. So the present hostel is about half a km away from campus. Secondly, the area in which its’ located is a bit dirty, with nallahs and dumps of garbage around it. But once you’re inside the hostel, it’s neat and clean. And frankly I enjoy visiting it (I’m a localite, so I don’t live there) but that’s for a different reason altogether. The all night all day gaming sessions are simply too much thrill! The food is nothing great but not that bad either.

Hang-Out Spots
There is a joke that does the rounds in the college corridors. Most people here feel library is the best hang out spot. Well the fully air conditioned world class Library and Information centre does make a good place for a sound afternoon nap! There are a couple of other hang-out spots like the Fast Food Centre (called the FFC) and the popular FlagPost (FP) area where you generally find couples making hay ( :D ) There are others like the Parking Lot, which is like a Disco with the stereo systems of the vehicles always blaring out loud music!

Courses Offered
JSS offers 8 engineering branches – Computer Science Engineering, Electronics and Communications, Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation and Control, Manufacturing Technology and Civil Engineering apart from courses like BBA, MBA, BCA and MCA.

The Civil Dept was started last year, so I’d suggest you against going for it mainly because its still very new.

Infrastructure
Just as much as is sufficient. Until now there was no auditorium, it’ under construction and is expected to be completed in the next couple of months. So, all the student activities and events are conducted in a big hall known as The Seminar Hall.
The computer labs are damn good with brand new tft screens and the best of the processors. The entire Computer Centre is centrally air conditioned. So, it’s fun surfing the internet or attending labs. The Internet speed is also quite good, although networking sites like orkut are banned. (But there are always ways to overcome the filters :p) The Workshops and Labs for the rest of the departments are very well equipped and are regularly upgraded with instruments and machinery.

Student Activities and Clubs
This according to me is the best thing about JSS. There are thousands of student activities happening round the year. An event almost every day. The major student societies are Lingua Franca(the literary society), Nibble Computer Society, Impetus Student Society, Quizzoc (the quizzing society), Oorja (Electrical Dept), YantraShilpa (Mechanical Dept) and Spice(Instrumentation and Control). The JSS Sports Association is very active and there are tournaments happening in almost all types of sports. So there are always events like Programming Contests, Debates, Music Competitions, Expert Talks etc. The Annual Tech-fest called Zealicon is a mega activity in itself. Google the word Zealicon to find the official website if this interests you.

Conclusion
Well, if you’re getting admission here, then this is definitely a good college but probably not as good as it is made out to be. Every person I’ve talked was a bit let down when he/she came here for the first time and gets used to it with time. Do not come here thinking that you’ve come into an IIT and that you’ll get to do ground-breaking research work. This is a UPTU college after all! One major advantage is that the college is in Noida and that too in an ultra-urban locality. So it gives a lot of exposure and confidence. All in all I’m happy to be spending four years of my engineering life here. Amen!
